Breville JE98XL Juicer Review

Breville JE98XL Juicer Review - stock photoThe Breville JE98XL is another high quality centrifugal juicer from this well known company. While it shares a lot in common with the cheaper and more expensive models in Breville’s series, you will find that you very much get what you pay for when selecting a Breville juicer.

This model has a more powerful motor, and an additional speed option than the cheaper BJE200XL, and is consequently more efficient in extracting juice. But it lacks as much power, speed control and extraction efficiency as the more expensive Breville models.

How easy is it to clean?

It is very important for you to select a juicer that is easy to clean. Some of the cheaper juicers available can take a frustrating amount of time to clean up after you finish juicing. The end result of this is that you will gradually stop using it, as it it will not seem worth the time and effort.

Same as the other Breville juicers that are available, the Breville JE98XL is very quick and easy to clean. The unit comes apart and can be put back together again very easily, and the pieces are dishwasher safe. If you want to clean them by hand, then a brush is provided with the juicer, and it only takes a few minutes to clean it under the tap.

A useful tip to consider, is putting a plastic bag inside the pulp catcher. This makes disposal of waste very easy, and reduces clean up time.

Versatility

While the Breville JE98XL juicer deals well with dense fruits and hard vegetables, it is not so effective on leafy greens and grasses. This is a common issue with centrifugal juicers. It does have two different speed settings which provides you with a slower speed setting than cheaper centrifugal juicers which does help with juicing these food items, but if you are going to be juicing a lot of grasses and leafy greens like spinach and kale then you might be better off looking at a masticating juicer instead.

Efficiency

One of the most important considerations when buying a juicer, is the efficiency with which it extracts juice from the fruit you are adding to it. This is one of the big reasons for buying a more expensive juicer over the cheaper ones on the market.

A juicer which is inefficient will require more fruit and vegetables to be put through it to make the same volume of juice, and this will cost you more money. If a cheap juicer is not extracting juice well, and you are juicing regularly, it will end up costing you more than an expensive, more efficient, model.

The efficiency of the Breville JE98XL is generally good, with the exception of grasses and leafy greens. It has two speed settings which helps you to find the most appropriate speed for the items you are juicing.

The pulp that is produced does still have a bit of moisture to it, but as you would expect, you will get a better level of extraction out of this juicer than you would get out of the cheaper Breville BJE200XL. But it is not as efficient as the more expensive multi speed Breville models.

Noise

The Breville JE98XL is a powerful unit, but like the other Breville juicers, it is quite quiet in comparison to other makes of centrifugal juicers. But it is clearly quite a bit louder than the masticating juicers.

Power and Speed

The Breville JE98XL juicer has a powerful 850 Watt motor, and two speed settings. The fast speed of 12,000 RPM’s is used for hard vegetables and dense fruits, while the slow speed of 6,500 RPM’s is designed to help you get better juice extraction from soft fruits and leafy greens. It can produce an 8oz glass of juice in just 5 seconds.

Breville JE98XL juicer Dimensions

It measures approximately 13-1/5 by 16-1/2 by 18-1/5 inches

Additional Features

  • The same as the other Breville models, the JE98XL has a 3″ feeder chute. I like the fact that this cuts down on preparation time, as some fruits and vegetables don’t need to be sliced to fit down it.
  • It has a large 2.5L pulp container, which attaches to the side, which allows you to put a reasonable amount of food through it without having to stop and empty the catcher all the time.
  • It has a safety locking arm. This stops the motor from starting at a potentially unsafe time, when the pieces of the unit are not properly in place.
  • It has an overload protection LED to help protect the motor.
  • It has an easy to use plug, which has a ring in it which makes it easier to put in and pull out of the plug socket.

Accessories

  • The Breville JE89XL comes with a 1L juice collection jug, with a froth separator, which will help to remove the froth from your juice should you wish.
  • A cleaning brush is provided, to assist you in cleaning the unit by hand.

Pros

  • As we have come to expect from Breville, this is a sturdy, well built unit. The plastics used are dense and high quality, and it has a stainless steel exterior. You know that this juicer will last you for years.
  • The Breville JE98XL has two speed settings, and this does help to increase the efficiency of juice extraction, as the slower speed that is not available on the cheaper Breville models does do a better job of juicing leafy greens and soft fruits, albeit it’s still not highly efficient at this.
  • It has a powerful motor, and produces juice very quickly. For solid fruit and vegetables it shows a good level of efficiency, it’s certainly superior in this aspect than cheaper centrifugal juicers.
  • I like the 3″ feeder chute that comes with the Brevilles. Anything that helps to cut down the time it takes to juice is a positive as far as i’m concerned, and the reduction in preparation time allowed by this is a definite plus point.
  • The machine is easy to take apart and very quick to clean, only taking a few minutes to do by hand. It is also very quick and easy to put it back together again.

Cons

  • The Breville JE98XL is very tall, similar to the other Breville units. This isn’t a major problem, but it might have trouble fitting under kitchen cupboards if they are set at a height that is close to your kitchen counter.
  • With a powerful motor, and wide feed chute, bits of fruit and vegetables can be propelled back out of the chute making a mess in your kitchen if you are not careful. Make sure that you cover the feed chute immediately after adding ingredients to prevent this from happening.
  • Despite having a slower speed setting to help with juicing the leafy greens and soft fruits, it is still not as efficient as we would like when it comes to juicing these items.

Consumer Ratings

This is a very popular unit with consumers. It’s a clear step up from the Breville BJE200XL, and juistifies it’s more expensive price. It’s not as good as the more expensive Brevilles, but the vast majority of people who have bought this unit have been very happy with it, and it currently has a 4.6 star rating on Amazon from customer reviews.

Warranty

The Breville JE98XL comes with a one-year limited warranty.
